The Old Jail is one of the few mid-19th century jails still intact in the state but is mostly known as the jail that incarcerated two infamous characters, Tom Dula (also referred to as Tom Dooley) and Anne Melton in the 1860's. Robert Cleveland and his family of 17 children lived in the log home built in the late 1700's originally located in Purlear. Robert Cleveland's brother, Col. Benjamin Cleveland, also lived in Wilkes and led forces from this region to the Battle of King's Mountain during the Revolutionary War.
